    Rising damp happens when moisture from the ground rises up through walls by capillary action. Signs include tide marks on walls, crumbling, damp plaster near skirting boards, white salt deposits, and peeling paint.

    Common causes include a damaged or absent damp proof course (DPC), external ground or paving built up above the DPC level, blocked air ventilation, and moisture-sources like persistent leaks or poor drainage around the property.

    Treatment usually involves injecting a chemical damp proof course into the affected walls, removing damaged plaster or render, replacing it with salt-resistant or renovating plaster, and ensuring ventilation plus external ground levels and drainage are correct.

    Drying time depends on wall thickness, the extent of moisture saturation, and environmental conditions. Some walls begin drying in weeks; others may need several months before full restoration works like replastering and repainting can safely proceed.

    If left untreated, rising damp can lead to structural damage, decay of plaster, paint and timber, mould growth (which may affect health), decreased insulation and energy efficiency, plus more costly repairs down the line.
